Woah, woah woah woah WOAH!, did these guys just say that they wouldn't pay a monthly fee for WoW or Rift, 2 games that have a shit load more content then STO, but apparently for 2 years they've been too happy to pay for STO?

Seriously?

In the same podcast they said they wouldn't play for tried and true good games but if you do Red Alerts you get boosted and then you can go the C-Store and get another boost "It's like doing speed and coke and then going for a jog" is what he said.  So pay pay pay pay pay, but not for any other game. Just STO.

Yeah they really said it. and with a straight face.

They are far better liars than I'll ever be that's for sure.

]It's a Trek thing. I wouldn't pay for WoW, or Rift either. I actually enjoy reading the junk the NPCs tell me in STO, because I know and enjoy the IP. WoW, and Rift, arguably, may have more content, but to me, it's all a generic mulligan stew of fantasy cliches about saving the kingdom/world from the "Me too" dragon/arch-evil guy(s). Such a treadmill that I quickly click through the NPC dialogue, and just do what the quest objectives tell me to do. Go here, kill ten bad guys, then go talk to whosamajiggy. Wash, rinse, repeat. Which kinda gets old quick. I imagine it's not a big deal for PvPers, where the object of the game is itself, tweaking your build, but it's a stomache cramp on my end. "

I agree with you. I like reading what they say as it makes the game a little bit more interesting. The only other game I've seen that comes close is WAR. The NPC's in STO are better though. I haven't played WoW or Rift so can't really comment there.
The needs of the many outway the needs of the one.

The Rift Lore appears to be complex, but I admit it doesn't really grab me. That is a big advantage for STO, SWTOR, LOTRO - people are already interested in the background. Not sure if it justifies the licensing costs for them, however.

(Imagine if SWTOR is a big hit, and you are Bioware/EA negotiating a renewal of the IP licence in the future... O.o)

Sorry for the odd edit I did Mlc... I hate the moderator button being so near the quote one.

As compared to the literal kill everything that move quests that make up 90 percent of sto or more? With plots (Devidian aside) so lame, that it's unbearably bad? One of the more iconicly laughable STO quests is the one with the undine impostor. Okay both of those.  Both of those are supposed to be major plot points in STO that reveal just how bad off you are. But how does it come across? the dialog of the Undine are so laughably obvious that you have to question why no one simply Airlocked them ahead of time. It's obvious that things aren't right, but the game plays it Straight. All the way through. Not only this, but the Undine are master shapeshifters that have been studying every little detail of starfleet's life for decades. They are intelligent and nefarious, and the game's execution of them is so poor they come across as nothing more than bad 60s comic villain characters.

Similar quest in RIFT? A ranger, notices that the village nearby is just wrong out and out. You're asked to Prove, her suspicions. When you go into the town, and talk to people the dialog is obviously out of kilter, but the game plays it as a race that doesn't really understand what Normal is and it comes off as somewhat lighthearted. They nailed it out of the park on that one.

Then there's the whole Kavugmogh whatever quest chain. And here we thought Wesley was bad. This was just lame in the extreme. Then there's the True Way which are 'terrorists' so why is it then, they have a fleet that's thousands of ships strong? They hold entire systems for themselves, and obviously a sector? STO has no stones to throw on anything in RIFT or WOW. Want to know what the coolest thing I ever did in STO was? My first Solo Duel against another Escort, that came out in a Victory in PvP. Everything else, stfs aside (and that almost always feels more like work than fun) was so easy pathetic, boring, and worse poorly written (devidian aside) that I just wanted it over with to get my XP, gear or emblem.

There's supposed to be a great war going on, and frankly it comes across as Starfleet, just bitch slapping everyone back into their borders routinely, because there is such a lack of challenge in PVE, and lack of actually focused story line.

Want to know what just one of my coolest moments in WOW was? I got to drive a nearly invincible tank through an entire army of mini bosses and slaughter them wholesale after having to spend several missions infiltrating around them carefully (so I didn't just die over and over and over again) to save a team of special ops guys. Who later proved their mettle against another small army and a very ticked off Dragon.

Or how about that time, I got to run around with a giant mech? That was friggin awesome.

I've actually done more Non Combat missions, and Exploration in RIFT and WOW, than I have over the course of what 8 toons now in STO? Point is, if someone can justify paying for STO they easily can for RIFT and WOW. There's alot of humor in WOW's missions when you read the quests, or look at various npcs. So many cultural references dropped. And RIFT has alot of deep lore that I'm only just now starting to read.

The only things STO has over RIFT and WOW? It has starships that fire energy weapons and torps. it has only -one- advantage in it's subpar and worthless crafting system, and that's it counts Mats in the bank toward your recipes. (but seeing as how crafted gear in STO is absolutely garbage that's not saying much) To say what the morons of STOked said though had nothing to do with personal taste. They out right claimed WOW, RIFT are inferior to STO and aren't worth paying for.

I made Alt toons in WOW, and never had to repeat missions to get to levels 45 and 50. STO? not having mission overlap is the exception rather than the rule. And then you have to do what passes for their lame exploration missions which only have what 10 environments maybe? in order to level before hell freezes over.

Unfortunately, the value of the IP tells you nothing about the execution in-game.  In 2008 I was just awed that AoC could screw up a game based on Conan, which seemed like it should be the most awesome setting for an MMORPG ever.

STO had really bad missions to start, though they got better in Featured Episodes.

As long as Lucas doesn't come in while I'm playin' and start rewriting corny dialogue into the script. I heard at the end of Star Wars Blu-Ray, He's gonna have Vader shake his fist and exclaim "I'll get you Skywalker, and your pretty little R2 unit too!"
All this happened... more, or less.
